Dog Enrichment at K-11: 13 Activities That Make Daycare and Boarding More Than Playtime

Most dog daycares are built around one thing: group play. Play matters, but a dog's brain needs a workout too. That is why enrichment is at the center of everything we do at K-11 Canine Care in Warrensville Heights. Enrichment means giving your dog activities that challenge their body, their nose, and their mind, so they come home happy, tired, and calm instead of wound up.

Why enrichment matters

Dogs were bred to work. They sniff, chase, problem solve, and learn. When those instincts have no outlet, boredom shows up as barking, chewing, jumping, and restlessness at home. Structured enrichment gives that energy somewhere to go. A dog who spent the day sniffing out treats, sprinting after a lure, and solving a puzzle is usually a much easier dog to live with that evening.

Enrichment activities at K-11

Every daycare day already includes supervised group play, grouping by temperament and size, scheduled rest breaks, and indoor and outdoor play areas. On top of that, you can add any of these to a daycare day or a boarding stay:

  • Fast CAT lure sprints: a full-speed chase after a moving lure, perfect for dogs who love to run.

  • Agility: jumps, tunnels, and obstacles that build confidence and coordination.

  • Treadmill fitness: a supervised 30 minute workout that burns energy safely in any weather.

  • Nature walks: one-on-one leash walks for fresh air and new smells.

  • Ball pit: a fun, silly way to burn energy and build confidence with new textures.

  • Puzzle games and enrichment feeders: food puzzles that make your dog think for their treats.

  • Scent work: sniffing games that tap into a dog's strongest sense and tire them out fast.

  • Play and Learn training games: short training sessions mixed into the day.

  • One-on-one cuddle and playtime: extra attention for dogs who love people as much as other dogs.

  • Dog-safe ice cream and special treats: a puppachino, a peanut butter Kong, or a cookie.

  • Paw print craft: a keepsake of your dog's paw to take home.

  • Bath before pick-up: go home with a clean, fresh dog.

In warmer weather, pool and water play is included at no extra cost for daycare and boarding dogs.

Enrichment for boarded dogs

Boarding can be stressful for some dogs. A new place, new routines, and time away from family can lead to pacing and restlessness. At K-11, boarded dogs join daycare during the day between boarded nights at no additional cost. Adding enrichment like a nature walk, extra cuddle time, or a puzzle feeder gives them something to look forward to and helps them settle in at night.

How to choose the right activities

  • High-energy dogs: Fast CAT, agility, and treadmill sessions.

  • Smart, busy-minded dogs: puzzle feeders, scent work, and training games.

  • Shy or senior dogs: nature walks and one-on-one cuddle time.

  • Dogs who deserve a treat: ice cream, a Kong, or a paw print to take home.
