The way a puppy feels about grooming is shaped early. A puppy who learns that brushing, baths, nail trims, and the sound of a dryer are normal and even pleasant usually grows into an adult dog who stands calmly on the table. A dog who meets the groomer for the first time at a year old, with a full adult coat and no experience being handled, often finds the whole thing scary.
Why early grooming matters
Less fear: puppies are curious and adapt quickly. New sights, sounds, and touch are easier to accept now than later.
Safer grooms for life: a calm dog is easier and safer to trim around the face, paws, and nails.
Healthier coat: regular grooming from the start prevents mats, especially during the puppy coat change between roughly 6 and 12 months.
Easier vet visits: a puppy used to having paws, ears, and mouth handled is easier to examine.
What happens at a first puppy groom
A first groom is about building a good experience, not a perfect haircut. Depending on your puppy, it can include a bath, blow dry, brush out, nail trim, ear cleaning, and a light tidy of the face, feet, and sanitary area. We keep it short, go at your puppy's pace, and use plenty of praise and breaks.
How to practice at home
Touch paws, ears, and mouth for a few seconds each day, then reward with a treat.
Brush for a minute or two at a time with a soft brush, even if the coat is short.
Let your puppy hear a hair dryer on low from a distance while they get treats.
Tap each nail with nail clippers without cutting, then reward.
Keep sessions short and end on a good note.
How often should puppies be groomed?
For doodles, poodle mixes, and other long or curly coats, start with a puppy groom every 4 to 6 weeks so it becomes routine. Short-coated breeds still benefit from regular baths and nail trims. Read more about doodle grooming schedules and preventing mats.
